NYC art map and recs, 2/10/25 - 2/16/25
Hi all! I hope everyone is staying warm. It’s a bit of a light week for openings, but some good shows opening (particularly on Thursday!) to hopefully drag us out of the winter doldrums and general hellscape that is reality right now. In some ways, art feels kind of pointless to care about right now, but is also a welcome distraction and one of the only things keeping me going.
I want to give a particular shoutout this week to the Laura Owens show opening across two Matthew Marks spaces this week. In case you didn’t know, Laura Owens is one of my absolute favorite artists and in my opinion one of the defining artists of her generation, and I think is absolutely crucial to any serious discussion on post-analog painting, or post-internet art. I maintain that her mid-career solo show at the Whitney is still the best solo painting show at a museum that I’ve ever seen, and there’s still so much about the work that continues to be of interest to me when we talk about the vital questions of painting.
This is her first NYC show since the Whitney show in 2017, and her first solo NYC gallery show since 2009 (!) at Gavin Brown (save for a one day book launch show at Karma in 2012). This is also her first major show with Matthew Marks (I say “major” since she did a show of books at the Los Angeles space in 2019) since the gallery started (quietly) representing her. I hope to see you there, and then at a couple of downtown openings after!
Also once again linking my running list of current gallery shows recommendations in list and map form!
