Hi folks! I hope everyone had a nice and restful holiday weekend. For me, it was the first time I took a few days off from art in quite a few weeks, and got to relax and spend time with friends.
We’re heading into the point of the year where there will be a lot of group exhibitions — I kind of love gallery group shows because they’re a chance to make discoveries of artists outside of a gallery’s program, and because sometimes they can really be ambitious and offer some sort of insight through a particular lens or curatorial idea. Maybe I’m a little nostalgic for summers past, where we got actually excellent sculpture and painting survey exhibitions — but I’m cautiously optimistic!
Speaking of group exhibitions, two new spaces which I highlighted in the geography brief section of last week’s newsletter are opening later this week: On Thursday, Frisson opens at 141 Attorney Street on the Lower East Side with the group exhibition NANNYCAM and on Friday, HIERRO presents A Short Lived Torture of Cacophony organized by Jorge Rios at 30-43 31 St. Street in Astoria.
Also a reminder that it’s the final week of the current exhibition Mitch Patrick & Ernesto Renda: Wayfinding that I curated at CHART. The exhibition is on view through May 31st — please do reach out if you haven’t seen it yet and you’d like a walkthrough or more info!
Finally, just a note that a lot of galleries shift to summer hours — usually Monday - Friday — at some point between after Memorial Day and after July 4th, so please check websites for hours before venturing out.
