NYC art map and recs, 6/23/25 - 6/29/25
Hi folks! My body is melting in this heat, and my brain is melting trying to comprehend how it’s possible that there are over 100 exhibitions opening in New York this week. I expect heavy weeks a few times per year — notably September, January, and May, but this feels like a bit of an aberration. I think this is probably the last major push until the Fall (though don’t hold me to that).
This past Sunday I went to In Search of Us, an exhibition of “immersive” technology based art currently on view at Water Street Projects as part of the Tribeca Film Festival. I use immersive loosely, because the level of immersiveness (immersivity?) really ranged from a free-standing LED screen with speakers, to iPads with augmented reality, to a video game with a headset, to VR headsets with haptic vests and gloves, to a mixed reality experience where you could interact with objects that appeared and disappeared within your space to…other things in between those. I’m not sure that I felt like it was all necessarily capital A art, nor did it have to — but if you’re anything of an art and technology nerd or generally enjoy interactive experiences, it’s worth checking out and is on view through this weekend.
As I was looking through this week’s list of exhibitions that are opening, I was struck by just how many are focused on or oriented around digital technology: Zancan: Tree_Line at bitforms, Groundwork at Heft, 20F (Simultaneity) at SWPK, foreverAgain at Offline, Trevor Paglen: Cardinals at Pace, and One Of Us Is Real And It’s Not You at Galerie Yeche Lange. (Full disclosure that I have not seen any of these exhibitions yet nor gotten previews for them so I can’t say for sure that they’re digital technology focused and am going off of a bit of conjecture here. Let me know if you see any of these and I’m wrong!)
