NYC art map and recs, 9/22/25 - 9/28/25
Hi folks! A little bit of a quieter week after a few busy ones — I took some artist friends who were visiting from out of town around on Saturday, and it was truly such a welcome breath of fresh air to see art with people who don’t consume it at the intense rate that I do, and to see them encounter work for the first time that was overly familiar to me.
We got through most of Chelsea, and I have to say, it’s kind of an odd Fall season where I don’t feel like there are really many blockbuster gallery shows, and where a lot of galleries seem to have opted to do historical shows. The Cady Noland exhibition at Gagosian is such a head scratcher, that I’ve heard wildly divergent takes on — people seem to either think it’s the best gallery show of the decade or the worst. Not sure I feel quite that strongly in either direction, but if the question is “Can you still be transgressive if you show at Gagosian?” the answer seems to be “No.”
I also want to say that it feels like a strong season for sculpture, with a slate of fantastic exhibitions including Kahlil Robert Irving: EF3+E40 at Canada, Nayland Blake at Matthew Marks, Max Hooper Schneider: Scavenger at 125 Newbury, DW Fitzpatrick: Daphne at Gordon Robichaux, and Jean-Luc Moulène at Miguel Abreu.
If you haven’t caught the current round of exhibitions in Tribeca, a bunch of galleries will be open late from 6pm - 8pm this Thursday for Autumn Art Night. Additionally, it is once again Bushwick Open Studios weekend! Every artist sets their own hours, so be sure to check out the member director for more info.
